Eye problems due to diabetes usually appear slowly. Careful treatment of diabetes can lower the risk of eye changes and prevent the progression of existing changes on the retina.

Laser photocoagulation of the ocular fundus is currently the most effective and most common treatment for retinopathy. In laser photocoagulation, either limited or extensive areas of the retina are treated by creating tiny laser burns. The aim is to preserve central vision.
